Nanci and Michael are Colorado natives whose story began long before they ever imagined a life together. They first met at Westgate Elementary School—Michael as a 4th grader and Nanci as a 6th grader. Nanci’s younger sister, Theresa, was best friends with Michael’s twin sister, Michelle, and through that bond the two families became deeply connected, sharing holidays, birthdays, weddings, and even times of loss.

Life took them on separate paths for many years. Both Nanci and Michael married other people before ultimately reconnecting in 2002. From that moment forward, it was clear this reunion was divinely orchestrated. Nanci brought two children from her first marriage—Marissa and Cody—and Michael embraced them fully as his own, step or not. In 2005, their daughter Samantha was born, adding yet another blessing to their family. Though Cody is now in heaven watching over them, his presence and impact remain forever woven into their lives.

Marissa is now a successful accountant and the VP of Accounting for Quorum Hospitality and oversees all the accounting financials for all the properties in the Quorum portfolio. Samantha earned both athletic (soccer) and academic scholarships to the University of Northern Colorado and, as a sophomore, concluded the 2025 season with the second-most minutes played on the field—an incredible achievement.

Nanci is a personal trainer dedicated to helping clients improve their quality of life through sustainable lifestyle choices. Michael’s journey is equally remarkable. After racing internationally—including the 1984 Giro d’Italia, the 1985 Vuelta a España, the Dauphiné, and many other European events—he entered the U.S. Navy, following in the footsteps of his father, a decorated Naval Aviator who dropped the first “official bomb” for the United States. Michael left the Navy in 1987 and returned to professional cycling, riding for teams such as Coors Light, Coors Light/ADR alongside Greg LeMond, AC Pinarello (where he finished as the top U.S.-based professional), and Motorola beginning in 1991 alongside Lance Armstrong. His career highlights include third place at the 1991 Tour de Romandie, fourth at the Classique des Alpes, and participation in all three Grand Tours, including four Tours de Suisse.

In 1993, a collision with a car resulted in a broken pelvis and back, ending Michael’s professional European career. After a two-year hiatus, he returned to racing at the Masters level, where he achieved extraordinary success—winning more than 40 State Championships, multiple National Championships in road racing and hill climbs, and World Championships.
